Below you will find my impression of Wychwood Lechlade Trout Fishery.
What is the fishing like? What are the facilities like?
It's my true and honest account of an average anglers days fishing. Fishing a venue the first time. |
|
| Lechlade is situated in the heart of
Gloucestershire and is renowned for its large hard fighting Rainbow and Brown
trout with some blues around too. They stock the fish themselves so they can
regulate it 364 days a year. There are two lakes Lechlade & Bushyleaze I fished Lechlade on a whole day 4 fish ticket. It was a reasonably cold March morning and the water was fairly clear, hardly any wind with just a slight ripple, excellent fishing conditions. In this article I will be concentrating on Lechlade Lake.

On the left you can see the front entrance to the lodge
this is where you purchase your
ticket. It also houses an impressive array of tackle for sale so you can
have a good browse round. They say only women window shop but put me
where there is fly tackle and I can lose an hour or two. At the rear of the shop is an excellent gutting facility where you can easily clean and fillet your fish. What an excellent idea saves all of the mess when you get home more fisheries should have them. |

Here is John the fishery manager hard at work, if you want to know what's happening regarding stocking policies and the most productive fly patterns he is the one to ask but I must admit all of the staff are extremely friendly and approachable. |
| A couple of days before planning to fish I emailed Tim
(the owner) and John to find out the methods and flies of the
moment and they were more than happy to give their advise. Which is invaluable if you
have not fished a venue before. As you can see on the right
they
were spot on. The method was single fly on a floating 7wt line with a long leader and
the fly was a Damsel Nymph. I also caught on other variations of Damsel
and a Bloodworm.
They certainly put a bend in the rod. |

Here is the fish a handsome 8lb 5oz Rainbow. |
| Another rod bender soon followed. |

| This is the inside of the Anglers lodge
where you can relax have some lunch (just what you bring yourself) and have a cup of tea or
coffee which incidentally is free. Refreshing you for the next session. Its home from home... |

|
| Conclusion: I caught my 4 fish limit with ease, smallest was 7lb 8oz and the biggest was 13lb 80z. What a day! So if you want a good day's fishing in excellent surroundings with really helpful staff Lechlade is the place to go. It is most defiantly one of the premier fisheries in the country and all at a reasonable price. John Wilson thought so much of Lechlade, he made one of his Dream Fishing videos here. I can't guarantee that you will always catch fish, who can, but I can only go from experience. On the day I went most people caught and the fish were reasonably spread out. Go on give it a go. It was worth my 190 mile round trip. For large fish they taste ok to.
